CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

When they arrived at their desks, Metzinger’s phone was ringing.

Givens got there first and picked it up.

“Detective Givens. How may I—”

She was interrupted and listened for a moment.

“Hey, go slow—She’s gone?—Since when?”

Metzinger listened, instincts aroused.

“Wait a minute.” Givens put her hand over the phone and looked at Metzinger.

“It’s Ginger Winslow. Joss has done a runner.”

Givens returned her attention to the phone conversation, repeating things back so Metzinger would know what was going on.

“Yes. You and your husband went shopping and when you got back, she was gone?”

Metzinger picked up an extension and joined the call.

“Metzinger here on the other phone. You sure she didn’t just go out for a while?”

“No, she took her suitcase and clothes. She’s gone—what’s that Ed? The what’s gone?—My God, she’s taken our gun!”

Metzinger drew in his breath.

“What kind of gun?”

A moment passed.

“He says a Glock 19. That mean anything to you?”

“Yes, Mrs. Winslow. It does. Do you have any idea where she might have gone?”

“No, I’m just getting to know her. I don’t have any idea where she would go.”

“Any idea why she might run?”

“No… I shouldn’t have left her. I told her about her father, and we had lunch… It was several hours ago… she didn’t seem too upset, just quiet… I shouldn’t have left her…”

“We’ll find her, but taking a weapon is worrisome. How did she know it was in your house?”

“I’ve no idea.”

“Okay. We’ll check with her sister. If there’s no answer there, we’ll put out a bulletin. I’ll call when we know something. Meanwhile, keep someone at home in case she comes back.”

As soon as they hung up. Metzinger flipped open his notebook and began dialing.

“Freddie, uh, Miss Winslow, this is Detective Metzinger. Did you get my previous call? —No, I didn’t leave a message. It’s bad news. You sitting down?—I’m afraid your father is dead—You still there?—No, he was murdered, stabbed in his kitchen—No, the body has been taken to the Medical Examiner’s—I’ll let you know what we find out—Of course. Meanwhile, I need your help with something else. Your sister has been staying with your aunt—Yeah, Ginger—She’s run away—Yes, the whole thing is a mess—I know she’s not your problem—Do you have any idea where she might have gone?—No idea? Okay, if you hear from her, you have my cell phone number—Yeah, it’s written on the back of the card I gave you—Call me if you hear anything from her.”

He turned to Givens.

“Will you put out a bulletin? I think I better get hold of Lt. Ramirez. After that we can go home. You can get a nap but stay ready in case something comes up.”

“Good thing I don’t have a date tonight.”
